A pandemic-friendly family room upgrade for sheltering in place, blending functionality and form
A family faced the new problem of work from home with 2 young kids (3 + 6) midway into the pandemic. With schools uncertain to open, they realized their home needed some recalibration for this new way of life.
Existing conditions: very open square space where the family watched TV, read, play games, and spent family time. It was also doubling as the kids play area, but they had trouble bridging the 2 functions in a way that didn't feel chaotic or confused.
We kept the seating facing the TV and added a custom floating media built in by Shialice Spatial Design. This contained and hid AV wires and equipment and helped to frame their television. To better define the 2 spaces we added 2 antique rugs.
Pod schooling elements included a custom sized chalk board and paper roll station (not sure what to call this) on either side of a play table. The baby Cherner chairs are authentic (never too early to introduce children to good design) and add a bit of sophistication.
Mixing modern lines with vintage details are a trademark of SASD's work and we were excited to find richly colored vintage school posters and vintage toys to accompany the large storage piece from DWR. The Client's own wooden rocking horse from childhood sits sit in the corner.
In the TV area, to offset the inevitable mess of books and toys, we kept the walls clear and selected one special piece of art to carve out some needed negative space.
