Creation of a family friendly family space in historic Spaulding Square
It was a cozy, charming space with wonderful people and beautiful objects. The wife is a therapist for the entertainment industry and the husband is a successful screenwriter for film and television. They and their vibrant 4 year old lived in a cottage home in Spaulding Square, a historic zone in the West Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles. The house was already charming and well lived in when we first met, evidenced by a collection of tasteful toddler toys and family treasures, but their living room needed some attention. It had become the main play area for their daughter and Bree, the wife, wanted to revive it for adults to use and live in as well. She found me and we quickly charged forward revamping the space, with new furnishings, rugs, window coverings, and commissioned art. Per recommendation, we mixed in newly made pieces with collectable vintage/antiques.
One of the most important notes for the design was that it had to accommodate their family's lifestyle. Namely, we wanted the room to be refined and curated for the adults (friends and family) while still being able to withstand functioning as a primary play area. To help visually contain the toys, books, and family photos, we added builtins built by local woodworkers flanking the fireplace. To create a more centralized point of focus, a custom nero marble mosaic from Waterworks replaced the original green tile fascia. To soften the edges of the room, we added custom linen drapery and a beautiful antique rug. A custom leather couch replaced an older worn number, to be decked with new-found vintage textiles and pillows.
